Hit the road this spring — with kids in tow — for one of these 8 family friend trips, from a Michigan tulip fest with 6 million stems to the home of Mark Twain.
As the snow is starting to melt, your mind may be turning to warmer days and the trips your family postponed the last few years. Equipped with just a car, you can easily pop over to any of these exciting cities for a day trip or a weekend away with the kids in tow.
Milwaukee is a city for indulging, whether it’s in baskets of fresh cheese curds or a visit to the Milwaukee Art Museum , famous for its more than 100,000 square feet of galleries and the massive, moving Burke Brise Soleil. If you visit before March 20, teens can draw inspiration from the Scholastic Art Awards student exhibition, while younger kids can immerse themselves in quarterly family Sundays, museum sketchbooks and a free family guide through the museum.
And hey, who doesn’t like to chow down on cheese curds, giant pretzels and brats in between activities? The drive is shorter than the run time of “Encanto,” making the trip to the second-largest Lake Michigan city an easy lift doable with a single bathroom break. Visitors tour the trails at the French Canyon waterfall at Starved Rock State Park in Utica, Illinois, in May 2014.
If you’ve been there, done that, then Matthiessen State Park should be next on a nature-loving family’s list. Just a few miles south of its more famous counterpart, it’s typically less crowded with more unique sights, including caves, valleys and waterfalls. If you go after a spot of rain, bring some waterproof shoes or a change of socks, because it can get a little muddy.
