Legal academic Dr Rocco Loiacono says it’s important to remember the “good” people have done, amid a push to remove Sir Samuel Walker Griffith’s name from institutions and places.
Dr Loiacono said it’s alleged Sir Griffith “did not do enough” to stop violence against Indigenous Australians during the expansion of European settlement in northern Queensland.
“While we shouldn’t obviously mythologise people … when we do make these judgements we also forget that people are human and they make mistakes,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny. “Samuel Griffith was twice the premier of Queensland, he was the first chief justice of this country, but he was also a great liberal reformer.”
