The Livestock Collective Director Holly Ludeman says the images of livestock in “shocking” conditions have led to “huge regulatory reform” and constant reporting to the federal government for animal welfare check-ins.
“The images we saw were shocking to everyone – that wasn’t the truth I knew – there’s been significant changes, huge regulatory reform, we’re not shipping sheep in the high-risk period, in the northern summer months,” Ms Ludeman told Sky News Australia.
“Significant increase in space available – veterinarians – changes in minimal airflow – a lot of innovation and research. “Mortality has always been used as a key measure – we’re now looking at more animal welfare indicators, are they resting, when are they standing, when are they sleeping, what the conditions of the flooring and all that’s reported to the federal government on a daily basis.”
