Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says he thinks there’s an expectation the government will eventually “fold” to the Greens on the safeguard mechanism and will need to “give them something”.
“It’s kind of been parked … in the sense that we’ve got two more sitting weeks this month but they’re after Albanese returns from India and America,” Mr Clennell told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“So I reported earlier this week I didn’t think there’d be any movement on that legislation, there’s very little in the Senate this week, it’s got to be said.

‘High-powered delegation’: Business leaders to travel with Albanese to IndiaSky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell has assessed which business leaders are amongst the 27 people who will be part of the prime ministerial delegation on his trip to India. 'Macquarie Bank CEO Shemara Wikramanayake, Twiggy Forrest, Wesfarmers boss Rob Scott, Commonwealth Bank boss Matt Comyn, ANZ boss Shayne Elliott, Rio Tinto boss Kellie Parker, the President of BHP Geraldine Slattery, Alison Dean from Cochlear and Mark Vassella from Bluescope Steel – what a high-powered delegation,' Mr Clennell said. “There will also be some renewable energy interests on the trip and some university bosses and Jennifer Westacott and Andrew McKellar the industry group bosses. “But it's significant to see so many minerals’ interests represented. “It's quite clear this government is not turning its back on coal exports despite the urgings of the Greens and the Teals.” Mr Clennell said after this India trip, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will be off to the US for the AUKUS announcement next week.

Albanese ‘milking’ Newspoll results showing majority of voters back super changesSky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says a Newspoll revealing two thirds of Australians support the recent super changes is a “gift for the government”. “As the PM and Treasurer return to Question Time after a difficult week last week, a Newspoll saying two thirds of Australians support their super tax changes, including a majority of Liberal voters,' Mr Clennell said. “This is similar sentiment to what we saw in Ermington in the federal seat of Bennelong and the New South Wales state seat of Parramatta when I accompanied the Labor candidate Donna Davis on the doors there last week.” Mr Clennell said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was “milking this poll” in Question Time earlier on Monday.
