AFR economics editor John Kehoe says Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese’s blunder on the first full day of the election campaign plays into the narrative that “you can’t trust Labor on the economy”.
While campaigning in Tasmania on Monday, Mr Albanese was unable to provide a figure for Australia’s unemployment rate or cash rate.
“When you’re vying to be the prime minister of the country, and you’re asked what the unemployment rate is or the interest rate of the Reserve Bank, you’re expected to know that,” Mr Kehoe told Sky News Australia. “Particularly for Labor, not a good start in the sense that in the polls, they always start behind in terms of who’s trusted to manage the economy.”
