NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller says there's 'an irony' to protest action as potential super spreaders for the virus have done nothing but encourage lockdown extensions.

Mick Fuller says protesters who 'demand freedom' are the ones responsible for lockdown extensions

"So when people do these activities during a pandemic, we need to take strong action because really it's holding us all back from getting out of lockdown and these restrictions."An estimated 1,000 protesters gathered in Tweed Heads on the NSW-Queensland border in defiance of the state-wide shutdown, displaying signs and shouting at police officers.

"But nevertheless we have faced some challenges during COVID and you know, it is testing people's patience but we do have to stay together on this, we've got to listen to the premier and take the health advice," he told Sky News Australia host Laura Hayes.
