Annastacia Palaszczuk has been ordered to attend the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics during an awkward press conference exchange with Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates.
But Mr Coates appeared to have other plans for the 51-year-old Queenslander, telling her she will be required to show her face at the event.
“There will be an opening and a closing ceremony in 2032 and all of you have got to get along there and understand the traditional parts of that, what’s involved in an opening ceremony. The uncomfortable exchange continued, with Mr Coates asking the premier if has ever experienced an opening ceremony.“You don’t know the protocols and I think it’s a very important lesson for everyone here – opening ceremonies cost in the order of $75 million to $100 million.”“My very strong recommendation is the Premier and the Lord Mayor and the Minister be there and understand it.”
She met with the International Olympic Committee at about 5pm local time in Tokyo on Wednesday, alongside Federal Sports Minister Richard Colbeck and Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, to spruik Brisbane's hosting capabilities.
