US looking to update space activity laws as current legislation is ‘not keeping up’US looking to update space activity laws as current legislation is ‘not keeping up’ANU astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker says the United States is looking to update the laws and regulations of commercial space activity. “When we think of space and regulation, it’s actually a very confusing area,” he told Sky News Australia. “It’s governed often by treaties that then have corresponding bodies who approve flights, going into space, coming back to space, all the processes.” Dr Tucker said space flight companies, such as SpaceX, are working not only for companies who work in air travel like the Federal Aviation Administration but also for the Environmental Protection Agency to set up their launch sites. “One of the realisations of the Biden administration is that, given how fast commercial activity is, where the law and legislation is not really keeping up with what needs to happen,” he said. “In fact, we’ve kind of seen an example of this in our own backdoor when the SpaceX crew … space junk crashed into the Snowy Mountains a few weeks ago.” Dr Tucker said the clean-up for the crash is a “very legislative and regulatory mess,” and what is needed is “clean, clear laws,” which can be updated.
