‘A balancing act’: Bronte surf club calms storm over revamp | MeganGorrey

The 1970s brick building that houses the Bronte Surf Life Saving Club will be replaced by a sleek white structure, under the club’s plan to tackle criticism of earlier plans for a $13 million revamp.

The club’s president Basil Scaffidi said the backlash had prompted the organisation, which is redeveloping the site with Waverley Council, to pursue an alternative design for public consultation. A report on the redesign said priorities included: Reducing the building’s footprint, mitigating noise, minimising the loss of views and green space, improving access to the coast walk, relocating the public amenities and improving the design to “address perceived privatisation of public space”.Louise Kennerley

He said the club had no female members when the building opened nearly 50 years ago, and more expansive women’s amenities and change rooms would provide for the 800 females among the club’s 1900 members.“It will be a wonderful building. This design goes into the hill and that increases the size of the public plaza. It’s sympathetic to the local environment and topography,” Scaffidi said.Waverley mayor Paula Masselos said the club and council had listened to the local community.
