Netball’s in-demand shooter Sophie Garbin says the ongoing issues plaguing her sport is starting to take its toll on the athletes.
, after Netball Australia rejected the union’s most recent pay deal proposal. It means the sport may soon be unable to feature the Diamonds in any promotional material.“It’s just a little bit frustrating from the players’ perspective,” Garbin said of the contract situation clouding netball on the eve of the Constellation Cup, against traditional rivals New Zealand.
“And it probably is weighing a little heavy on a few of us. But we know that we can perform under pressure and under circumstances when things off the court aren’t going well. And I mean, we probably showed that last Constellation Cup.”Diamonds captain Liz Watson echoed Garbin’s comments, declaring at a press conference on the eve of the cup that the dispute would “absolutely not” impact the players’ performance on the court.
“We thought this going to be done before World Cup, so obviously we do want this to be done as quick as we can ... it is for that security, to start planning for the future. Pre-season’s starting very, very soon.”Garbin is expected to sign with SEN’s new team, the Melbourne Mavericks, but can’t put pen to paper without a collective agreement in place.
