Edmund White and his husband Michael Carroll, Brian Alessandro, and Igor Karash reveal how White’s coming-out classic, first published 40 years ago, was reborn with illustrations.

“Those on the right wander around needing objects for their fury. Gays are always good for that, I guess,” said White. Alessandro said three LGBTQ artists were too nervous to take the project on, because of its depictions of teen sexuality.
