As I browsed souvenirs on my arrival, the lady manning the stall asked me where I’m from, provoking a discussion on one of my favourite topics: Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry. “I love your films,” she said. “I watch them every week!” Every third person I met mentioned that they religiously watched our soapy dramas. They struck up conversations about how they’d always wanted to visit Africa, about the similarities between our cuisines and culture.

It was the same wherever I went; the breathtaking Harbour Island, the awe-inspiring Andros Town. It’s easy to forget just how much the internet makes us focus on differences as opposed to our shared histories and similarities. As the Black travel movement continues to swell online, so has the number of non-native Black visitors to a host of destinations, flocking to Nigeria and Ghana for the so-called “Detty December” festivities.

The internet generally distorts our relationships. People often seem far closer than they are in comment sections, men and women appear to constantly be at war. But one of the most tiring distortions are the so-called “diaspora wars” that break out online, described by Urban Dictionary as “skuffles [sic] of hatred and culture clash between different members of a diaspora”.
