It’s not that I don’t admire those people who do winter laps in sea pools. I just don’t want to be them.

It’s not that I don’t admire those people who do winter laps in sea pools regularly and those who summon up the courage to take theThis last activity is not on my bucket list, along with other things not on my bucket list, like hot-air ballooning. I appreciate the experience might be exhilarating but any activity that needs a doctor on standby I’ll steer clear of, thank you.

I once went to a posh spa there for a few days, lying in turbulent, heated seawater baths and being hosed down forcefully with strong jets of water. It wasn’t that pleasant.Spa visits are not so much a medical tradition here. But, then again, access to salt water is free and easy for most Australian coastal dwellers. We don’t need spas run by doctors in white coats to prescribe that medicine. We do it anyway.

Recently, I visited Sequoia Lodge in the Adelaide Hills, which sits on ancient spring waters just below the peak of Mount Lofty, carving their way through the layers of sandstone. Two spring-fed pools and an infinity pool look down over a ridge onto the Piccadilly Valley.
