Cardinal Pell’s barrister Robert Richter QC had argued that the suppression order should remain in place while Pell is afforded an opportunity to appeal the guilty convictions, but he abandoned the argument, and the suppression order was lifted. Eminent media lawyer Justin Quill told King the change in tactic likely came on Pell’s instructions.
Lucie Morris-Marr, the reporter who broke the news that Victoria Police were investigating Pell for historic sex offences about four years ago, said the scandal “goes as close to Pope Francis as it ever has before”.“He was at the senior level. He was trusted by those boys, he was trusted by Australia,” she told King.“He caught them drinking wine, and yes it was naughty, but it didn’t deserve what unfolded. The sexual attack was quite violent on those boys and it destroyed their lives.
“I have no doubt if there is a god, he will punch George Pell to the earth and back. If there is a hell, he will rot and burn in it,” he said.
