NZ Police are vowing to continue their search for two bodies that remain missing one week after the devastating White Island volcanic eruption.

NZ Police says it's frustrating that they have failed to locate two bodies that remain missing a week after Monday's Whakaari volcanic eruption, but have vowed to continue the search.

Defence force operatives returned to Whakaari on Sunday, two days after their successful high-stakes trip to the active volcano brought back six bodies.Police understand eight people were killed on the island, and spent Saturday debriefing the operation and searching nearby waters for the last two bodies.

Sunday morning's visit was quicker than Friday's four-hour salvage effort due to differences in breathing apparatus which limited their time on the island to 75 minutes.
