From Oxford Street to Cronulla, local residents and businesses are divided over plans for new cycleways

installed by the government under emergency COVID-19 powers in Glebe, Paddington and Erskineville upset residents who sought a legal opinion declaring they were unlawful.

Business Sydney executive director Paul Nicolaou said the business lobby group supported cycleways, but community objections, such as those of Oxford Street businesses and residents should not be ignored. “A ‘set and forget’ approach to cycleways does not help their supporters or those who might be ambivalent or opposed and who can then report rarely seeing disputed cycleways being used.”

Moore said work will also soon begin on construction of the Oxford Street West cycleway between Taylor Square and Castlereagh Street, which involves “reallocating” one city-bound traffic lane. The Chamber said cycling safety could be improved by trialling a 40 km/h speed limit for the whole of Oxford Street or making the bike lane on Moore Park Road permanent.

However, developer Theo Onisforou, who owns several properties on Oxford Street, backs the cycleway, which he said offered the opportunity to improve the look of the retail strip.
