Josiah Daniel and Kari Daniel are proprietors of Downtown Coffee in downtown Paris. Kari also teaches yoga in the restored historic building.PARIS — Look, dear reader, I hope I’m not sowing seeds of envy with this column, but the fact is, it’s April and I’m in Paris. Cool drink in hand, I’m taking in the sights from the base of the Eiffel Tower. Yes, I know: I’m a fortunate man.
Gary and Leslie Flynn are native Texans, but they are in many ways typical new Parisians. He’s a recently retired Fort Worth firefighter; she’s an accountant who has worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas at the company headquarters in Richardson for 34 years, although these days she doesn’t have to be in the office every day. They fell in love with Paris and environs years ago, visiting relatives who had acreage in the rolling, woodsy countryside.
“The game-changers are the young people coming back,” the mayor told me. She had in mind people like Kari and Josiah Daniel, who bought a downtown building that once housed the Salvation Army and transformed it into a coffee house and yoga studio. They live upstairs with their 3-year-old. As in many smaller Texas cities, downtown Paris eventually drifted into decline. “We had so many vacant buildings downtown,” Portugal said. “They hadn’t been used for years, except maybe for storage. I can still see all those dirty windows. Not anymore.”
