was “a very dangerous” one, such that without careful casting, and rigorous work both in rehearsals and on set, his latest film might have turned out “totally different” than that which he’d originally envisioned.
“This was a character that was very passive. He was not making decisions himself as much, and he could be not that much likable for the audience. It could be very dangerous for the role if the character turned out to be a kind of character that’s not that likable and maybe even looked like an idiot,” the Oscar nominee explained, via interpreter Rayan Farzad, in a conversation put on as part of Deadline’s Virtual Screening Series.
The character Farhadi describes is Rahim, who is in prison because of a debt he was unable to repay. During a two-day leave, he tries to convince his creditor to withdraw his complaint against the payment of part of the sum. But things don’t go as planned. The actor Farhadi would turn to for the role was Amir Jadidi, who said he contended with the fact that he was “far away…both physically and mentally” from Rahim by delving deep into his “mentality” and “physical characteristics,” from the way he walked to the tenor of his voice.
“When Amir came to my office, I was always constantly looking at his face to make sure, does he have a face that the audience, when [they see] that face, they kind of like the character—not only in the face, but also in the eyes, as well,” said Farhadi. “And happily, Amir does have that.”, working with one of the world’s most decorated filmmakers was “a great experience” that he wishes all actors could have. “For me, working with Mr.
