Houston political consultant convicted of trying to coerce former state rep to resign
texted a message about releasing potentially embarrassing information to a former state representative
Damien Jones, 38, of Houston, was found guilty by a Harris County jury after a three-day trial, according to a press release. "This is a First Amendment case," said defense attorney Oliver Jason Brown."People need to take caution, that based off of conviction and how the law is written, you could theoretically charge anyone who threatens to bring hatred, contempt or embarrassment on a public official. That's how the law is written. It's written incorrectly."
Calanni reported the text to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which investigated the texts along with the district attorney's office.
