Share to linkedin... [+]AFP/Getty ImagesAs we got closer to 10:03 p.m., the predicted time of arrival of Sunday’s giant wave, we got more and more nervous.
We knew a rare"five-star" wave was going to come right at us, backwards up this mighty tidal river. With luck, it would dissipate just below. It would cause the river to surge to the level of the ground we were standing on, but no more. The thing about giant waves three hours after sunset is that you can’t see them coming. We’re just after a New Moon, a “Super New Moon,” in fact–the very cause of a rare “king tide” that’s responsible for the phenomenon–so we could see nothing.
Out of the darkness, suddenly we could see it. A mighty wave emerged not 100 yards in front of us. Instinctively I moved my smartphone up to the breast pockets of my jacket, a pathetic attempt given the massive volume of water that was heading our way. “It’s NOT a tsunami. It’s NOT a tsunami. It’s NOT a tsunami … are we about to get soaked?” The wave hit the bank in front of us with a crash and the river swelled. “Woah … that’s incredible!” The Severn instantly looked completely different; behind the bore was a wall of water that had doubled its size and broken its banks. We walked back to civilization through flooded farmland that 15 minutes earlier had been far above the river.
