A-League club owner Paul Lederer says no local club could ever have afforded Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese star’s messy exit from Manchester United.
has poured cold water on Cristiano Ronaldo’s suggestion that he was approached to play in Australia, saying the Portuguese star could demand far more than any local club could afford.
“Nobody knows this, but I had many opportunities in Europe, Brazil, Australia, America, Portugal, many clubs tried to sign me. I gave my word to this club,” Ronaldo said at a press conference on Tuesday. Mr Lederer also talked down the possibility of Ronaldo making his way Down Under following his stint with Al Nassr, pointing out that the former Manchester United captain, who turns 38 next month, would be the wrong side of 40 by the time he got here.He said A-League clubs could pay two designated marquee players an unlimited amount that exists outside their regular salary cap.
“Del Piero not only had the football talent, he also had the character and marketing capital. He was the whole package,” Mr Lederer said.
