The gap between numbers of top grade A-levels achieved in the North East compared to London has doubled since 2019, leading to criticism of Government 'catch-up' policies

Ucas, the university admissions service, said on Thursday that the the ratio of students from advantaged backgrounds gaining university places compared to those from disadvantaged backgrounds had increased slightly this year from 2.29 to 2.30. The number of school leavers from the most disadvantaged backgrounds fell by nearly 700 to 25,760 this year, although an overall reduction in UK 18-year-olds entering university meant the numbers from advantaged backgrounds also fell.

Students at fee-paying schools are now about twice as likely to obtain top A-level grades than their peers at state schools following a widening in the attainment gap during the pandemic. Education think-tank the Sutton Trust said the growing disparity between the private and state sectors could be put down to the fact that pupils in fee-paying schools were more likely to have benefited from better remote-learning facilities and fewer missed school days during the pandemic.: “The widening of the gap between private and state schools achieving top A-level grades is a continuation of the trend of recent years.
