A central Sydney pub owned by a pioneering Hollywood publican has been sold in a multi-million-dollar deal to a private investment firm.
The venue attracted interest from 212 parties during the sale processIt is understood the Hollywood Hotel — owned by former Tinseltown star Doris Goddard for 42 years before her death in 2019 — will keep trading on its corner position in inner-city Surry Hills.The ABC understands the Petersen Group purchased the iconic pub for more than $9 million, however they declined to comment on the sale.
Goddard purchased the pub in 1978 for $178,000 and used her draw as a former star of stage and screen to put the "Hollywood" in its name. The former actress, entertainer and cabaret singer often serenaded patrons of the pub with live song or poetry performances. The three-storey hotel was among a handful of pubs owned by her, including Newtown's Marlborough Hotel and the West End Hotel in Balmain."It brings great pleasure to know the successful party will keep the doors open in a fashion consistent with how Sydney has enjoyed a relationship with this wonderful hotel," Mr Goddard said.
