New short film series focuses on lifelong Jersey City residents and their connections to the city | SpotlightFor India Nicholas Edwards, it’s hard to fathom how far the United States has come in her lifetime.
Edwards was one of only eight Black students who graduated from Snyder High School in 1938 and became the first Black social worker at the Hudson County Welfare Board. She also has the rare distinction of surviving two deadly pandemics, the influenza pandemic that broke out in 1918 and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“From growing up in a certain house in Jersey City to where they do community service, there are some places in Jersey City that you wouldn’t think twice about, but they may have a more powerful meaning to someone else who lives in the city,” said Christopher Perez, president of the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy. “There’s so much change going on in Jersey City that I think it’s important we remember its past.
Edwards earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Administration at Wilber Force University in Ohio and working as a social worker at Christ Hospital, the county welfare board, the Lutheran Home for the Aged and the Jersey City Office on Aging, from which she retired.Edwards, active for years in the Civil Rights and senior rights movements, is a recipient of the NAACP’s Golden Warriors Award. She and her husband counted famed criminal attorney Raymond A. Brown among their friends.
Edwards also has spent time writing poetry on civil rights and daily life issues. Her daughters have compiled her poetry into a book, “From the Creative Desk of India N. Edwards,” that will be available for purchase.
