Jack Sawyer could be tapped by defensive coordinator Jim Knowles for the new disruptor role.
Part of the new scheme included a position called the jack, also known as the leo, a defensive end-linebacker hybrid.Babin’s high level of energy made him a natural fit, and he became the first in a line of defenders to thrive as the jack under Knowles.
The responsibilities then expanded to pass rushing as offenses had a difficult time keeping tabs on the jack. In some situations, Babin lined up as a lineman in a three-point stance. He was also positioned as a linebacker in others.“You're putting the jack the best you can in the situation where he has the ability to have an impact on the play,” Babin said.
Whether they have a background as a defensive end or linebacker, Knowles said he’s still in search of a disruptor for the role.
