A new exhibition of the works of Peter Kingston – showing his beloved Sydney Harbour and home – has opened at the State Library.
For artist Peter Kingston, from his childhood growing up at Parsley Bay to his adult home in Lavender Bay, the waterways of Sydney were both passion and muse.Icons such as Luna Park, the Harbour Bridge and Opera House and the double-ended Lady-class ferries feature often in his evocative, much sought-after oil paintings.
“In the hours before he died he said to Jan – don’t forget to save the MLC Centre,” his sister Fairlie Kingston recalls. Cork joined the campaign to save the North Sydney modernist building, and eight months after his death the Land and Environment Court spared it from the wrecking ball. Kingston would have loved it.The year before his death, Kingston returned his Member of the Order of Australia award in protest at the decision to give tennis great Margaret Court the country’s highest honour.
“For my sixth birthday he made a puppet theatre for me … He loved cartoons – our father worked for 20th Century Fox, and used to bring these clippings home off the cutting room floor. Peter would splice togetherand show them on the projector in this little projection room under the house. He managed to nearly electrocute himself once. So that was how he fell in love with cartoons.”
