The final real estate documents were signed on Thursday.

The organization will begin work transforming the property into the Alexander Grass Campus for Jewish Life. Abby Smith, chair of the Jewish Federation’s board of directors, said in a news release that the new campus will enhance the quality of Jewish life in Harrisburg through philanthropy, education, social services, arts, culture, health and wellness.“This is a major milestone for the Jewish Community and for the region,” Smith said.

The campus, which sits just a few blocks from its current property, is designed to benefit and serve the community-at-large, regardless of religious affiliation, Smith said. The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg is the umbrella organization for the Jewish Community Center. The campus will include space for all of its programs and activities. It will house the Brenner Family Early Learning Center, which cares for infants to preschool-age children and a fitness center, and will also be home to Jewish Family Service of Greater Harrisburg and the Silver Academy, the Harrisburg area’s only Jewish day school.

The property, located between Front and Second streets, includes six brick-faced buildings and an underground garage. It sits just a few blocks away from the current Jewish Community Center at 3301 N. Front St. in Harrisburg, which will remain fully operational until the new campus is ready for occupancy. The Federation said it will begin construction during the coming months and expects renovations to be completed early next year.

The property was purchased for $4.56 million. Officials said that the purchase was made possible by a contribution from the Alexander Grass Foundation.
