Israel heads towards a third national election in less than a year with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fighting to save his political career.
"Keep your children away from the television," he said, predicting the next campaign would be a"festival of hate, violence and disgust"."There are only three reasons for this election — bribery, fraud and breach of trust."The allegations formed a sticking point in negotiations over forming government, as Mr Netanyahu insisted on continuing to serve as Prime Minister of a governing coalition.
However, Blue and White's leader Benny Gantz refused to serve under a Prime Minister facing such serious legal problems and called on Mr Netanyahu's Likud party to choose a different leader. During a final three-week window that ended on Wednesday, the two parties were unable to agree on a power-sharing agreement that would have avoided another vote.
