To imagine a society better equipped to deal with what will inevitably be extreme and challenging circumstances. But they gained little political traction.
As the virus began its spread commentators around the world talked about the COVID X-ray. The pandemic revealed the broken bones and structural weaknesses of societies and institutions. And so it was here. Resilience, compassion, adaptation and a readiness to co-operate for the common good were revealed on one X-ray plate; longstanding fault lines of race, class, gender, inequality, and the legacy of underinvestment in public services came from another.
