'All of us should support the idea that every child, no matter what they identify as, deserves equal opportunity to find a loving and supportive parent or family and receive services necessary for their livelihood.'
After college, I worked in child welfare and helped those between the ages of 16-24 access transitional services like housing, financial aid for education, and employment opportunities. When a youth was experiencing homelessness, we often had to search hard to find a place in transitional housing. In places outside of a big city, like where I live in Los Angeles, placements can be even harder to come by.
Now, as a gay man who grew up in foster care, I would love to eventually foster and adopt a child with similar experiences. Arguably, through my shared background and professional experience in child welfare, someone like me would make an excellent parent to an LGBTQ child in foster care. Right now, though, federally funded agencies can exclude me from fostering and adopting for those very same reasons.
For many children, denying people like me the right to foster and adopt might very well mean the difference between a placement with a loving parent and a placement in a group home or institution. All of us should support the idea that every child, no matter what they identify as, deserves equal opportunity to find a loving and supportive parent or family and receive services necessary for their livelihood. This rule takes that equal opportunity away from thousands of children.
