The phone rang with good news. I had won a prize for writing a story and received $50,000. I called the fanciest restaurant in our town and made a reservation for two. Sarah and I dressed up and celebrated with champagne. We chose a bottle of WA red wine and started with bread cooked in a woodfire oven, burrata, and anchovies. The waitress, from Brazil, was friendly and joined our conversation. Sarah asked if prizes were taxed, and I realized I might face scrutiny from tax authorities.
