Hundreds of nurses gathered on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, outside Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville over the suspension of nine nurses, including one who was eventually fired.The nurse’s union says she may have saved the patient’s life through quick action.The incident and its ripple effects have triggered a petition with dozens of signatures, multiple suspensions, the nurse’s termination and a protest in front of the Belleville hospital as the acrimony continues.
The root incident occurred March 1 when a rapid response team nurse was treating a patient and administered an IV, according to the union. It’s unclear which department the patient was in. The nurse, who 1199SEIU declined to identify, needed to stabilize the patient’s arm with a securement device to administer the IV, the union says.
“The petition sought reconsideration of the Hospital’s decision to suspend the nurse for 2 weeks after she safely — and according to her judgment and specialized training — rendered critical care to one of the Hospital’s patients who was in dire need of an IV line to enable the patient to receive medication,” read a statement from 1199SEIU. “The nurse’s care and diligence may have saved that patient’s life.
On April 26, about a dozen nurses — including the nurse who had administered the IV — filed a petition against the hospital bearing the signatures of 170 health care workers over the disciplinary action.
