Kitchen renovations revealed an extensive passage of faded handwriting on the walls behind the cabinets, that referenced the 1994 bushfires
photographer Louise Kennerley decided to do some kitchen renovations at her home in Maroubra, events took an unexpected turn.
But who was behind this historical gem? It says the work was done by "Peter" assisted by 21-year-old Andrew Castle VK2AC and 22-year-old Michael. Only one surname and what does VK2AC mean?A little research and it transpires it's a call sign used by ham radio operators. John Bishop, president of the Hornsby and District Amateur Radio Club looked it up on the Register of Radiocommunication Licences.
Mr Vernon said he lived at the house for 10 years, which hadn't been touched since the 1930s. He discovered a bit of history himself when they started the renovations - the newspapers under the lino covered events of the Second World War. "Andrew and I would meet every morning for a surf," he said. "That day the sky was dark and raining ash, and it was really ominous and surreal. I grew up in the Blue Mountains and was very familiar with the effects of bushfires. My parents still live there, and I always worry for them when I hear the news from home. Things have changed since '94. It's hotter and drier and the bushfires are more intense.
