A red zone threat? Cowboys add reinstated WR Martavis Bryant to practice squad. He has not played in the NFL since 2018 to repeated violations of drug policy

After not making any moves before the NFL trade deadline expired last week, the Cowboys went back their old fashioned way of trying add a talent by taking a chance on a player with a troubled past.Bryant was scheduled to travel to work out for the Tennessee Titans but the Cowboys didn’t let him get out of the town.

Bryant, who most recently played in the XFL, has not played in the NFL since 2018 due to repeated violations of the substance abuse policy.Although Bryant is now age 31, he has the profile the Cowboys were looking for to help complete the receiver corps and add red zone threat to the offense. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound receiver had 18 touchdowns in 44 career games with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders.

The Cowboys will bring Bryant along slowly but they believe he can contribute to offense and be a viable option heading into the playoffs.Clarence E. Hill Jr. has covered the Dallas Cowboys as a beat writer/columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram since 1997. That includes just two playoff wins, six coaches and countless controversies from the demise of the dynasty teams of the 1990s through the rollercoaster years of the Tony Romo era until Jason Garrett’s process Cowboys.
