Plus: Stephen Piscotty, Matt Chapman weigh in on labor talks; newly acquired Adam Oller’s wild travels to get to Mesa

MESA, Ariz. — After a year of left wrist issues that eventually led to a late August surgery, Stephen Piscotty says his wrist is back to full health.

Piscotty said there was “a ton of talk” right before the lockout, setting him up with the people he needed to work with, before the “radio silence” began. In a sporting landscape where teams usually manage the day-to-day of injury rehabilitation meticulously, Piscotty had to be the point guard of his rehab.

“I think Stephen’s hope, and our hope for Stephen, is [that] he stays healthy,” Kotsay said. “A healthy Stephen Piscotty, if you look at his track record, is a really, really good player. And unfortunately, the last couple years, he’s dealt with injury, as we all do as players — it’s a grind. So I’m just hoping that Stephen is healthy and then he can get back to having fun.”

The A’s may have signaled their desire to move Laureano in their trade of Matt Olson, acquiring the Braves’ No. 1 prospect in outfielder Christian Pache. Pache, 23, debuted in the majors in 2020 and has long been considered one of the top prospects in the Braves’ farm system, but the speedy outfielder has just eight hits in 67 career at-bats.

Oller had been added to the Mets’ 40-man roster in mid-November, which New York told him they did to prevent him from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft . When the Mets were recently connected in trade rumors with the A’s and the Cincinnati Reds, Oller quipped that “it’s going to be one of those two” for him.

The key for the breakout? Oller said he and the Mets worked on cleaning up his mechanics, making his delivery more fluid and repeatable, which helped stabilize his velocity in the 93-to-95 miles per hour range. But he admitted the “biggest part of it was the mental aspect of it.”
