The shine has already come off a sparkling new government, but it has more at stake next Tuesday when it delivers a brutal budget.

However, the worst may not be behind the Minns administration. After years of NSW voters being conditioned to the state budget being in rude health – at least before the high-spending COVID years – a shock is coming. Labor has made no secret of this. At every opportunity, it has sought to paint a grim picture of NSW’s financial future. The rising cost of living is biting hard, and at the same time the government faces extreme pressures on the high levels of debt and rising interest rates.

Labor’s backwards slide, however, is not because the Liberals have had a stunning start in opposition. Leader Mark Speakman has been a safe enough pair of hands but, like most opposition leaders at a state level, he has little public profile. Former ministers on his team have struggled to make the transition to opposition.

The opposition also made an early major misstep in attacking the Independent Commission Against Corruption. It claimed the ICAC was engaged in a “reckless power grab” in requesting more powers to investigate claims that senior Liberal members were involved in branch-stacking to help the now-fugitive Jean Nassif secure development applications. Speakman even suggested possible illegal conduct at the hands of the ICAC.
