Planning Minister Rob Stokes has approved revised plans for Waterloo South to go on public exhibition, in a compromise aimed at breaking a deadlock between the City of Sydney and the state’s housing authority over the scale of development

on Tuesday - push hundreds of vulnerable residents at the estate closer to having their homes demolished for a mix of private, affordable and public housing.

Between five and 10 per cent - potentially 300 homes - would be affordable housing for low-income workers.There would be provision for 1976 private apartments - about 64 per cent of dwellings. with the council in 2019 to allow 3000 homes to be built in nine towers and smaller blocks. The council prepared another plan for a similar number of homes but three towers.Both the City of Sydney and LAHC were pushing for more than 900 social housing properties at the site, while the council wanted more than 600 affordable dwellings and dedicated social housing for Indigenous tenants.

“We will continue to work closely with the state government to ensure more needed social and affordable housing is part of the mix,” Ms Moore said.
