Since he was 19, Mr Hopf has fostered 36 young people for long-term placements and numerous others for short-term stays. "I went to school on my 16th birthday," he said, "and I knew when I went to school that day I wasn't going to go home.""I ended up in every sense of the word as a street kid, living in Kings Cross," he said.
The young Hopf tied for first place but was told not to return the next day because of his shabby clothes."And totally out of the crowd a fellow came over to me and in an American accent said, 'Matey, I've heard what's happening, the last hour I've done a little bit of homework on you and I know you're up at the cross [Kings Cross].Mr Hopf did as he was told and found a new set of clothes waiting for him.
