Ahead of tenders being called for the Gabba redevelopment, a construction industry figure has questioned how a decade of major projects will be delivered.
Under the rebuild, crowds will teem into the Gabba via a new pedestrian bridge rather than along clogged streets.Paul Bidwell, chief executive of Queensland Master Builders Association, said the Gabba redevelopment was only part of a $100 billion, 10-year pipeline of health, housing, transport, infrastructure and energy projects.
“The challenge is if you overlay the health-program projects that will be built progressively, then you’ve got all the transport infrastructure, then all the schools, and billions of dollars being spent on renewable energy across the state over the next 10 years,” Bidwell said.Bidwell questioned how governments and the construction sector could meet the“Now in Queensland, that equates to a bit fewer than 50,000 dwellings per year; that is, detached houses and units,” he said.
The Gabba redevelopment is not the only major Olympics project: the 17,000-seat Brisbane Arena will be built at Roma Street, funded by the federal government, while the state government has vowed toThe construction boom in Brisbane is set to continue but there are questions over how so many projects will be managed.
