Climate 200-backed MP Zali Steggall has hit out at the Coalition's nuclear energy plan, claiming the concept of baseload power is “antiquated” and “proving to be more and more a thing of the past”.

Labor is expected to place greater emphasis on renewable energy for its 2050 plan, with gas and storage also forming part of the energy mix. “The idea, the old-fashioned concept of baseload power is proving to be more and more a thing of the past so we have to stop thinking that we’re investing for the future to replicate the past.

“The upside of gas... is that gas can be turned on and off. So not wasted by having it on 24/7, but the approval coming out of WA is incredibly concerning.” This came as Ms Steggall was pressed on Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell's prediction on Sunday morning that neither party will secure 76 seats.

She continued to outline that she would not support legislation that expands the use of fossil fuels when reminded that both parties have room for gas in their energy plans. In response, Energy Minister Chris Bowen has accused Mr Dutton and the opposition of making"heroic assumptions" about the plausibility of nuclear.
