Australia’s aviation sector could be crippled with skyrocketing air fares after the government’s rejection of increased Qatar Airways flights, industry experts have warned.
An analysis from flight search company Kayak in May found international air fares from Australia had more than doubled since pre-pandemic levels.
“Qatar was one of those airlines that continued flying into Australia all over the COVID lockdown and border closure period bringing in essential supplies and freight,” Mr Turner said. The incident saw Qatari police detain and inappropriately search five Australian women at the airport after forcing them to disembark off aircrafts at gunpoint.
Federal Transport Minister Catherine King has however denied claims that the episode shaped the government’s rejection for extra flights, saying “I wouldn’t link the decision not to continue to engage with Qatar”.
