A Queensland community is in shock after a man, 36, is killed by a shark while spearfishing in waters off Fraser Island.
A Queensland community is in shock in the wake of a man being killed by a shark in waters off Fraser Island yesterday afternoon.the 36-year-old Sunshine Coast man was spearfishing off Indian Head in the island's remote north-east when his leg was mauledBystanders, including a doctor and a nurse, treated him before paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene."To come here, to come explore our wild open spaces and to die is beyond words a tragedy for our community," he said.
Tourist Simon Wedgewood, who was at Eli Creek on the eastern side of Fraser Island at the time of the attack, said the area was notoriously dangerous. "I was pretty shocked because there's no way I'd be swimming up there, let alone spearfishing," he said."You just don't go swimming on that eastern side, there's always sharks there."It's very sad for the family, but I hope people don't do that. It's too high a risk.""Our condolences go out to the family of the man who lost his life off Fraser Island in that brutal shark attack," she said.
"It's once again a reminder that, especially around that Fraser Island area, it is home to a lot of sharks and great whites." Queensland police will continue to investigate the incident today, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.Rob Pedretti was killed by a great white shark while surfing at Salt BeachTwo other surfers helped him fight off the shark and make it to the beach, but he died a short time later from horrific wounds to his left thigh.
