If the House of Representatives decides to impeach President Trump, expect a ratings boost for cable news and broadcast TV. With few commercial breaks, there will be a limited amount of advertising, though.

More recently, Trump’s ascension to the White House has resulted in record highfor several cable networks. Since the televised Republican presidential debates in 2015, Fox News, MSNBC and CNN have sustained strong ratings and ranked among the top-rated cable networks on television for several years.

In June 2017, the testimony of former FBI director James Comey averaged 19.5 million TV viewers. The contentious confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in September 2018 averaged 20.4 million TV viewers. The hearing of Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen in February 2019 averaged 15.8 million TV viewers. Most recently, special counsel Robert Mueller’s live testimony in July 2019 averaged over 12.9 million TV viewers.

Both MSNBC and Fox News were launched months apart in 1996 competing with the more established CNN. At the time of the impeachment hearings,was available in 44 million TV households and Fox News in 35 million TV households. With its extensive coverage, MSNBC was called “all Monica, all the time”. During the hearings both MSNBC and Fox News were able to get new viewers sampling the network.
