'You can’t even tell people that live in housing commissions to social distance – some families have nine or 10 people living in a bedroom. How can you tell them to social distance?'

Residents of the Flemington towers have vented their frustration with the Andrews government over their five-day hard lockdown, saying that risks were foreseeable in the densely populated towers but they were not adequately serviced by health authorities.

"You can’t even tell people that live in housing commissions to social distance – some families have nine or 10 people living in a bedroom. How can you tell them to social distance?""I think the government should have had a specific policy to deal with the high rises. It was a very obvious risk.""The overwhelming majority of the community don’t have jobs that mean they can work from home. They drive taxis, Ubers, and work in factories.

"However, overcrowded living conditions assist the virus to spread. We believe that if Victoria had more public housing, this would be less of an issue". "A daily sanitisation of all the directly affected floors at both estates has been put into place, and onsite testing began on Friday," they said.

TOTAL LOCKDOWN: More than 3,000 residents unable to leave their homes as COVID cases in Victoria surges | Sky News AustraliaTOTAL LOCKDOWN: More than 3,000 residents unable to leave their homes as COVID cases in Victoria surges | Sky News AustraliaVictorian Premier Daniel Andrews has taken the unprecedented step to lock down 3,000 residents in nine public housing estates in the suburbs of Flemington and North Melbourne for five days from Sunday.\n\nThe extraordinary measures come as Victoria recorded 108 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the highest since March 28.\n\nThe number of postcodes now under lockdown has risen to 12.\n\n'This is a very significant step. Not one we've had to take before, but it is for the protection of residents and the community,' Mr Andrews said.\n\nApproximately 500 police officers per shift will enforce the lockdown in what Mr Andrews called an 'unprecedented' police response.\n\nPremier Andrews acknowledged the logistical difficulties providing food for over 3,000 people.\n\n'Can I just say to all Victorians these numbers are a very real concern to all of us. That’s why it is so, so important that if you have symptoms you come forward and get tested,' he said.\n\n'If you’re in one of those towers the minister has just read out, you will not be allowed to leave your unit, your dwelling within that tower, for any reason.\n\n'That is not an easy decision to make but it is the appropriate decision to make.
