The roots of the Easter Egg Roll are often traced to President James Madison and first lady, Dolly Madison, but these early public celebrations were held on Capitol Hill. The first roll at the White House was in 1878, and came about as an act of necessity: After a law was passed prohibiting children from disrupting the newly landscaped lawn on Capitol Hill, President Rutherford B. Hayes opened up the White House grounds for egg rollers.

Mrs. Roosevelt was a big fan of the festivities and refused to cut it even at the height of World War II. In 1940 and 1941, she invited a group of European refugee children as her guests.During the Truman years, the Easter Egg Roll was once again discontinued and remained slow to return due to construction on the South Lawn. It came back in 1953 under President Dwight D.
