Aarhus embraces its Viking identity via myriad museums, great restaurants, and even a strange clown pub.
Take a step closer. That gilded crucifix emerging from the candlelight features a Jesus like no other – Christ as Viking warrior. Or maybe even as Thor himself, complete with beard, plaits, decorative breast-plate and crown. There may be shades of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but you are in a seriously ancient place.
Despite its tangle of streets, Aarhus is a relatively easy place to navigate. The mainstream pedestrianised shopping drag Strøget leads arrow straight from the station to the cathedral with not much to detain you except maybe the panoramic views from the roof garden cantilevering off the top of the Salling department store.
