The former prime minister said he was happy to support anything “designed to alert people about the dangers of this Voice proposal”, Sky News Australia can reveal.

Mr McGowan has campaigned in favour of the Voice, urging the public to support a change to the Constitution and ignore “scaremongering” in the lead-up to the referendum.

“On two occasions, he has arrogantly evaded answering the question and continues to keep it secret,” Mr Goiran said. The petition calls on the premier to deliver to Parliament within 14 days of its tabling “all briefing notes and similar documents he received on the proposed ‘Voice’ prior to him making his public declaration of support”.

The Victorian Bar Council has yet to announce formal support as it remains torn on a position. Mr Wood said when a Bar Council becomes political, “it risks damaging and degrading its institutional capacity to speak”. “Once you become a cheerleader for a political cause, then your ability to speak out on unpopular causes is diminished,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin. “They shouldn’t be entering into that field.”
