The ABC has been forced to delete doctored audio from a news report it claimed depicted Australian soldiers firing on unarmed civilians, admitting the content had been published in 'error'.

The ABC is investigating how it published footage, which has since been removed, that included doctored audio as part of a story accusing an Australian soldier of firing at unarmed civilians in Afghanistan .The ABC has been forced to delete doctored audio from a news report it claimed depicted Australian soldiers firing on unarmed civilians, admitting the content had been published in"error".

A report containing the footage has been available on the national broadcaster's website for almost two years and supported claims that former commander Heston Russell had fired at civilians multiple times from a helicopter in 2012. In an interview with Channel 7's Spotlight program on Sunday, the former commander maintained he was not the soldier depicted in the footage and that it was lacking important context not presented by the national broadcaster.

"Two things. First and foremost, it's not me. Secondly, here's the full context: they were not unarmed civilians. Even after we gave the ABC the footage, the narrative was that I was shooting at unarmed civilians." The ABC has removed footage which purportedly shows an Australian soldier firing at unarmed civilians in Afghanistan following allegations it contained doctored audio. Picture: Getty Images
