Pearland shuts out Clear Brook to sweep softball playoff series
Pearland’s Abigail Gutierrez pitches to Clear Brook in a 6A bi-district playoff game Thursday, April 27, 2023 at Pearland High School.Pearland’s Abigail Gutierrez has been summoning courage all year to endure an inflamed labrum in her pitching arm, so it wasn’t surprising that she went the extra mile in a Class 6A bi-district softball series Thursday night.
Gutierrez, a senior lefthander, threw only a handful of innings in Pearland’s series-opening 13-3 win Wednesday night. After a one-out infield single from sophomore Kaylee Schweitzer, Lady Oilers senior shortstop Kristyn Whitlock ripped a run-scoring double to right-center field. Pearland eventually moved two runners into scoring position, and both scored on pinch hitter Laila Nobles’ fly ball to left field.
Lady Oilers head coach Laneigh Clark was glad to see her defense respond with Gutierrez pitching to contact.
