The effective ban on face-to-face interaction during the pandemic has scuppered Aboriginal youth support progress, and in Ballarat hugely successful programs have been shut.

"There was a young fella that took off from his family due to family violence, but he actually stayed away from home," Mr Kanoa said.

"So there's that trust. If they didn't build that trust up this young person could have broken into someone's house, or smashed a window and just stayed the night in a shopping complex.""At the end of the day he would have been picked up and put in custody," he said. "So that generational trauma around the Stolen Generation, for example, we're still feeling the effects of that today," he said.

"People say to me 'oh, Aboriginal people need to get over it' or 'that [the Stolen Generation] didn't actually impact you'," he said.
